What's the difference between basioccipital and occiput?
Basioccipital
Definition:
(a.) Of or pertaining to the bone in the base of the cranium, frequently forming a part of the occipital in the adult, but usually distinct in the young.
(n.) The basioccipital bone.

Occiput
Definition:
(n.) The back, or posterior, part of the head or skull; the region of the occipital bone.

(1) Familial occipitalization of the atlas with atlantalization of the axis was defined as a single congenital disease in Arabian horses following a clinical, radiologic, and morphologic study of 16 horses with congenital malformations of the occiput, atlas, and axis, and from a study of three reported cases.
(2) The infant, who was utterly small for his gestational age, showed an aberrant motoric pattern and a high forehead, low-set ears, a prominent occiput and scoliosis, an extension defect in the knee joints and flexed, ulnar-deviated wrists.
(3) Other factors of importance were: an increase in the anterior depth of the mandible; a reduction in the distance between the occiput and the spinous process of C1, and to a lesser extent the C1-C2 interspinous gap; and reduced mobility of the mandible associated with temporo-mandibular joint arthritis or trismus.

(6) Surgical treatment for cervical myelopathy in os odontoideum with posterior instability is suggested as follows: in the absence of canal stenosis of the atlas (Group IIIA), atlantoaxial fusion in a reduced position is indicated; when associated with canal stenosis of the atlas (Group IIIB), laminectomy of the atlas followed by occiput-to-C2 arthrodesis is indispensable.
