Definition:

  • (a.) Of or pertaining to the bone in the base of the cranium, frequently forming a part of the occipital in the adult, but usually distinct in the young.

  • (n.) The back, or posterior, part of the head or skull; the region of the occipital bone.

  • (6) Surgical treatment for cervical myelopathy in os odontoideum with posterior instability is suggested as follows: in the absence of canal stenosis of the atlas (Group IIIA), atlantoaxial fusion in a reduced position is indicated; when associated with canal stenosis of the atlas (Group IIIB), laminectomy of the atlas followed by occiput-to-C2 arthrodesis is indispensable.
