(1) These results indicate that the inhibition of CarAc by heavy metals occurs by binding of the sulfhydryl on the enzyme by the metals.
(2) The effect of administration of the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI), lisinopril (Carace; 10-40 mg twice daily) and the calcium channel blocker, nifedipine (Adalat Retard; 20-40 mg twice daily) on ex vivo [45Ca2+] uptake by platelets from hypertensive diabetic (type 1 and 2) patients was investigated.
(3) We studied the IgE and IgG4 response of 11 cat-allergic patients against Fel d I-like structures in eight members of the Felidae family: ocelot, puma, serval, siberian tiger, lion, jaguar, snow leopard, and caracal.
(4) Cysteine preincubation decreased the amount of inhibition of CarAc by the metals.
(5) In addition, caracal (Felis caracal) from the park and its vicinity as well as from the Graaff-Reinet region of the Karoo were examined.
(6) Complete collections of ticks were made from 50 caracals (Felis caracal) in the Cradock, Graaff-Reinet and Southwell regions in the eastern Cape Province.
(7) The caracals from Southwell were infested with 11 tick species and the seasonal abundance of Ixodes pilosus on these animals was determined.
(8) However, 50% or more of helmeted guinea fowl and kudu from the Andries Vosloo Kudu Reserve; helmeted guinea fowl, scrub hares and eland (Taurotragus oryx) from the Mountain Zebra National Park; helmeted guinea fowl, kudu, domestic sheep, goats and cattle on the farm "Bucklands", and caracal (Felis caracal) from the Cradock and Southwell areas of the eastern Cape Province were infested with immature A. marmoreum.
(9) We found that all patients had cross-reacting IgE antibodies to seven of the Felidae tested; no IgE antibodies reactive with the caracal were found.
(10) Cat Haven has housed Bengal tigers, Siberian lynx, caracals, jaguars and leopards of various types as well as bobcats native to the area.
(11) Kinetic studies using Hanes plots revealed a mixed type of inhibition of CarAc by the metals.
(12) Caracal were moderately good hosts of these stages and, with mountain reedbuck (Redunca fulvorufula) and eland (Taurotragus oryx), are the preferred hosts of adult ticks.
(13) CarAc was inhibited by inorganic and organic mercury and cadmium.
(14) Caracal aurata is a medium-sized cat, about twice the size of a domestic cat, and strongly-built.
(15) Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from the internal organs of a captive caracal lynx (Felis caracal) which died of acute septicemia.
(16) Species affected included a range of primates and birds, a rodent (Capybara) and a carnivore (Caracal Lynx).
(17) The morphological characters of the girdles and limb-bones of the Lynx (Felis lynx Linnaeus) and the Caracal (Felis caracal Schreber) have been studied.
(18) The effect of the heavy metal toxicants HgCl2, CH3HgCl, and CdCl2 on the acetylating activity of membranous carnitine acetyltransferase (CarAc) in membrane vesicles from the maternal surface of human placental syncytiotrophoblast has been investigated.
(19) and one caracal, Felis caracal) died suddenly in the University of Ibadan Zoological Garden without previous signs of illness.
(20) Eight of 10 patients with IgG4 antibodies directed to cat dander also had IgG4 antibodies directed to several Felidae species, including the caracal.
