What's the difference between divisor and submultiple?

Divisor

Definition:

  • (n.) The number by which the dividend is divided.

Example Sentences:

  • (1) The new index distinguished 19 of 23 patients with pulmonary hypertension, with one false positive, when the divisor was actual lung volume; when predicted lung volume was used 18 of 23 patients were distinguished, again with one false positive result.
  • (2) The common divisor for interectopic intervals, ectopic complex interpolation, P-Q and Q-T intervals of the main complex and the presence of a wave on the ascending or descending slope of the R wave in sinus QRS complex were determined.
  • (3) The residual mean-square errors (the divisor being four less than the number of data points, since four parameters are estimated) seem to be unbiased estimators of the variances of the errors.
  • (4) The number of physically acceptable solutions for a given N is omega(N) + 1, where omega(N) is the number of divisors of N. The ground-state energy and entropy for these are calculated.

Submultiple

Definition:

  • (n.) A number or quality which is contained in another an exact number of times, or is an aliquot part of it; thus, 7 is the submultiple of 56, being contained in it eight times.
  • (a.) Of or pertaining to a submultiple; being a submultiple; as, a submultiple number; submultiple ratio.

Example Sentences:

  • (1) If Hydra is stimulated by repetitive light pulses of 0.5-10 sec duration, at a frequency different from the CPT's average one, the CPT's frequency modifies; if the stimulation frequency is included in a range not too much up or below that of CPT's the new CPT's frequency equals exactly that of stimulation; close to this range the CPT's frequency is a multiple or submultiple of that of stimulation.
  • (2) Elementary conductance steps submultiple of the open states were not identified in single channel records owing to rapid transitions between different states.
  • (3) The period of the ultradian REM sleep rhythm is no integral submultiple of 24 h, so that the remainder causes a daily drift in the REM sleep rhythm.
  • (4) The hemoglobin exists as a 350 000 molecular weight submultiple in 6 M guanidine and can be further dissociated into a 175-200 000 dalton polypeptide in 6M guanidine, 0.1 M 2-mercaptoethanol or by sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis of globin, performic acid oxidized globin or carboxymethylated globin.
  • (5) The quaternary structure of this pigment is unaffected by pH between 6.0 and 11.5 in the presence of 0.01 M Mg2+ whereas in 0l01 M EDTA, the pigment begins to dissociate above pH 9.0 into smaller submultiples.
  • (6) The review of available studies suggests that the joint relationship of radon and smoking with lung cancer is consistent with a multiplicative model, but a submultiplicative relationship is most likely.
  • (7) Periodogram analysis for any given animal revealed that the ultradian periods were always submultiples of the entrained or free-running circadian period.
  • (8) Limitations are: 1) the liter as sole recommended unit of volume in concentration measurement; 2) substance concentration (unit mole) favored over mass concentration (submultiples of the kilogram); and 3) discouraging the use of the prefixes hecto-, deca-, deci-, and centi-.
