What's the difference between endopodite and meropodite?

Endopodite

Definition:

  • (n.) The internal or principal branch of the locomotive appendages of Crustacea. See Maxilliped.

Example Sentences:

  • (1) While an experimentally generated discontinuity between the lateral margin of the exopodite and the medial margin of the endopodite (outer-to-outer junction) triggers intercalation of supernumerary rami, a discontinuity of pattern between the medial margin of the exopodite and the lateral margin of the endopodite (inner-to-inner junction) is stable despite the absence of intervening intersegmental membrane.
  • (2) The branchial warts on the endopodites of the gills are covered with goblet-shaped cuticular appendages, whose internal structure shows them to be chemoreceptors.
  • (3) The endopodite of the male swimmeret has an accessory lobe covered with short "bristly spines" (serrate setae).
  • (4) The most caudal limb in crayfish, the uropod, has two rami, the exopodite and the endopodite.

Meropodite

Definition:

  • (n.) The fourth joint of a typical appendage of Crustacea.

Example Sentences:

  • (1) The activity of the motor axons supplying the muscles of the meropodite can be also influenced by a variety of natural stimuli applied to other appendages.
  • (2) Recordings from the meropodite extensor muscle indicated that the tonic extensor motoneuron was primarily responsible for M-C joint extension.
  • (3) Animals used different methods of pressing the bar; the most common was extension of the claw, predominantly at the meropodite-carpopodite joint.
  • (4) The proximal accessory flexor (PAF) of the myochordotonal organ (MCO) in the meropodite of crayfish walking legs contains two populations of muscle fibers which are distinguishable by their diameters.
  • (5) The motor program and role of the meropodite sensory organs (the chordotonal organs MC-1, MC-2 and the myochordotonal organ MCO) in extension of the merocarpodite (M-C) joint of the claw was examined during an antennal-evoked defense response.
  • (6) Inactivation of individual meropodite sensory organs did not alter the tonic motoneuron response.
