Ovule


Definition:

  • (n.) The rudiment of a seed. It grows from a placenta, and consists of a soft nucleus within two delicate coatings. The attached base of the ovule is the hilum, the coatings are united with the nucleus at the chalaza, and their minute orifice is the foramen.
  • (n.) An ovum.

Proembryo


Definition:

  • (n.) The series of cells formed in the ovule of a flowering plant after fertilization, but before the formation of the embryo.
  • (n.) The primary growth from the spore in certain cryptogamous plants; as, the proembryo, or protonema, of mosses.
