(1) Their receptive fields were mapped and classified as corresponding to those of parvi- or magnocellular neurons in the lateral geniculate nucleus.
(2) The activation of neurones in the mLRN (major portion of lateral reticular nucleus comprising its parvi- and magnocellular parts) be a spinal path ascending in the dorsal funiculus (DF) and by trigeminal afferents has been studied.
(3) When the total distribution of parabigeminogeniculate axons is considered, it is apparent that the cells of origin of each of the major (small-celled, parvi- and magnocellular) geniculocortical channels receives parabigeminal input.
(4) In addition to their morphology and size, the postsynaptic targets of TRN terminals are similar within the three sets (parvi-, magno-, and koniocellular) of geniculate layers.
(5) Injections that were more caudal and within the parvi- and magnocellular red nucleus (RNp and RNm) labelled cells not only in areas 4 and 6 but also in portions of adjacent areas 3a, 3b, 5a, and 7.
(6) When we examined serial sections consecutively stained with anti-WGA, anti-pro-TRH, and anti-WGA, most of the pro-TRH-labeled neurons in the medial parvi-PVN and a part of the neurons in the anterior periventricular area and in the anterior, lateral, and dorsal parvi-PVN appeared to incorporate WGA.
(7) In intact rats, immunoreactive pro-TRH-positive neurons occurred in the parvicellular paraventricular nucleus (parvi-PVN), basal part of the anterior and lateral hypothalamus, perifornical area and dorsomedial nucleus, especially accumulating in the parvi-PVN.
(8) The assertion made by Burton, Bloedel and Gregory (1971) that neurones in the mLRN (major portion of lateral reticular nucleus comprising its parvi- and magnocellular parts) receive collateral excitation from the dorsal spinocerebellar tract (DSCT) has been tested.
