What's the difference between quahaug and quahog?

Quahaug

Definition:

  • (n.) An American market clam (Venus mercenaria). It is sold in large quantities, and is highly valued as food. Called also round clam, and hard clam.

Example Sentences:

  • (1) The Northern quahaug and a strain of the type 1 attenuated poliovirus were used as the working model.
  • (2) The uptake of Escherichia coli by the quahaug, Mercenaria mercenaria, was studied to obtain an insight into the environmental parameters significant to the accumulation of bacterial pathogens by shellfish growing in polluted waters and into the kinetics of the uptake process.
  • (3) Preliminary experiments in the experimental system under arbitrarily selected conditions showed that depuration of poliovirus-polluted quahaugs could be achieved by the method used for the Eastern oyster.
  • (4) Data from periodic assays of individual animals suggested that accumulation of the bacteria by the quahaug proceeds to an equilibrium level which is a function of E. coli content of the water and its overall particulate matter.
  • (5) Two systems supplied with fresh running seawater, three strains of human enterovirus and the Northern quahaug, were used as working models.
  • (6) Bacteria with the morphology of species of Nitrosomonas and Nitrosococcus were also observed in colonies in the surface slimes of marine culture systems for striped bass (Morone saxatilis) and quahaug (Mercenaria mercenaria).

Quahog

Definition:

  • (n.) Alt. of Quahaug

Example Sentences:

  • (1) ME was found only in the mitochondrial fraction of ribbed mussel and quahog gill tissue whereas sea mussel gills showed distinct cytosolic and mitochondrial ME isozymes.
  • (2) Southern quahog clams, Mercenaria campechiensis, were dosed with Vibrio vulnificus and placed in a pilot-scale depuration system using ozonated recirculated artificial seawater.
  • (3) Aspartate aminotransferase (AAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), malic enzyme (ME), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), pyruvate kinase (PK), and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) activities in cytosolic and mitochondrial fractions of gill tissue from Modiolus demissus (ribbed mussel), Mytilus edulis (sea mussel), Crassostrea virginica (oyster) and Mercenaria mercenaria (quahog) were determined using enzyme assay and starch gel electrophoresis combined with subcellular fractionation.
  • (4) Serotonin immunoreactivity was localized in hearts of the opisthobranch gastropod, Aplysia californica (sea hare) and several species of bivalve mollusks, the heterodonts, Mercenaria mercenaria (quahog or cherry stone clam), Protothaca staminea (little neck clam), and the pteriomorphs, Hinnites multirugosus (rock scallop), Crassostrea virginica (eastern oyster), Mytilus edulis (eastern mussel), and Geukensia demissa (ribbed mussel).
  • (5) Candida parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, and Torulopsis glabrata were the human-associated yeasts most frequently isolated from quahogs, oysters, and mussels collected from four estuarine areas along the northern shore of Long Island Sound.
  • (6) Although ALAT showed distinct mitochondrial and cytosolic isozymes in the gills of oysters, sea mussels and quahogs, only the mitochondrial ALAT was evident in ribbed mussel gill tissue.
