Tangent


Definition:

  • (v. t.) A tangent line curve, or surface; specifically, that portion of the straight line tangent to a curve that is between the point of tangency and a given line, the given line being, for example, the axis of abscissas, or a radius of a circle produced. See Trigonometrical function, under Function.

Transverse


Definition:

  • (a.) Lying or being across, or in a crosswise direction; athwart; -- often opposed to longitudinal.
  • (n.) Anything that is transverse or athwart.
  • (n.) The longer, or transverse, axis of an ellipse.
  • (v. t.) To overturn; to change.
  • (v. t.) To change from prose into verse, or from verse into prose.
