Tetanic


Definition:

  • (a.) Of or pertaining to tetanus; having the character of tetanus; as, a tetanic state; tetanic contraction.
  • (a.) Producing, or tending to produce, tetanus, or tonic contraction of the muscles; as, a tetanic remedy. See Tetanic, n.
  • (n.) A substance (notably nux vomica, strychnine, and brucine) which, either as a remedy or a poison, acts primarily on the spinal cord, and which, when taken in comparatively large quantity, produces tetanic spasms or convulsions.

Tetany


Definition:

  • (n.) A morbid condition resembling tetanus, but distinguished from it by being less severe and having intermittent spasms.

  • (1) It is shown from an analysis of the transient force responses observed after sudden changes in muscle length applied both at full and reduced overlap and during the rising phase of short tetani that these responses can be explained on the basis of varying numbers of cross bridges attached at the time of the length step.
