Tetragonal


Definition:

  • (a.) Of or pertaining to a tetragon; having four angles or sides; thus, the square, the parallelogram, the rhombus, and the trapezium are tetragonal fingers.
  • (a.) Having four prominent longitudinal angles.
  • (a.) Designating, or belonging to, a certain system of crystallization; dimetric. See Tetragonal system, under Crystallization.

Zircon


Definition:

  • (n.) A mineral occurring in tetragonal crystals, usually of a brown or gray color. It consists of silica and zirconia. A red variety, used as a gem, is called hyacinth. Colorless, pale-yellow or smoky-brown varieties from Ceylon are called jargon.
