What's the difference between treadmill and treadwheel?

Treadmill

Definition:

  • (n.) A mill worked by persons treading upon steps on the periphery of a wide wheel having a horizontal axis. It is used principally as a means of prison discipline. Also, a mill worked by horses, dogs, etc., treading an endless belt.

Example Sentences:

  • (2) Brief treadmill exercise tests showed appropriate rate response to increased walking speed and gradient.

  • (4) Male Sprague Dawley rats either trained (T, N = 9) for 11 wk on a rodent treadmill, remained sedentary, and were fed ad libitum (S, N = 8) or remained sedentary and were food restricted (pair fed, PF, N = 8) so that final body weights were similar to T. After training, T had significantly higher red gastrocnemius muscle citrate synthase activity compared with S and PF.
  • (5) Ten animals served as sedentary controls, the 10 experimental animals were subjected to a training program with gradually increasing intensity of 18 weeks duration on a motor-driven treadmill.
  • (6) Repeated bouts of heavy treadmill exercise (6 min at 95% VO2 max) were performed once per hour for 24 h in order to promote a shift in energy substrate from carbohydrate to fat.
  • (7) To evaluate isotope limb blood flow measurement in intermittent claudication we have assessed 58 non-diabetic patients comparing our new method with treadmill testing and Doppler assessment.
  • (8) O2 consumption (VO2) was measured during a submaximal treadmill exercise test 165 min postprandially before and the morning after the overfeeding protocol.
  • (9) An increased neuronal activity was obtained by exercising the rats in a commercial rodent treadmill a couple of hours per day for 14 days.
  • (10) The slope of this line was substantially steeper than the regression line slope for treadmill running.4.
  • (11) Changes in treadmill grade had a significant effect on VO2, HR, and VE, regardless of the type of pack carried.
  • (12) Patients with angina and ST depression had significantly higher prevalence of downsloping ST depression in the recovery phase (68% versus 37%; p < 0.001) and a higher prevalence of treadmill exercise score indicating high risk (49% versus 3.2%; p < 0.001).
  • (13) The specificity of the treadmill test in patients who had received digitalis was 73%.
  • (14) To determine whether limitation of subendocardial blood flow after exercise is a determinant of such dysfunction in the presence of chronic coronary stenosis, nine conscious chronically instrumented dogs having an Ameroid constrictor were studied before, during, and after treadmill runs that induced regional ischemia.
  • (15) Treadmill acceleration impulses were backwards or forwards directed, or their direction was inverted after 30 ms. Backwards directed impulses were followed by gastrocnemius and forwards directed ones by tibialis anterior EMG responses (latency 65-75 ms) whose duration depended on impulse duration.
  • (16) The task used in the study was a stabilometer balance task, and fatigue was induced by walking on a treadmill.
  • (17) --Compared with controls, subjects in all three exercise training conditions showed significant improvements in treadmill exercise test performance at 6 and 12 months (P less than .03).
  • (18) A second period of treadmill exercise, of the same level and duration, was then performed, and blood sampling and spirometry were repeated at the same time intervals after the end of exercise.
  • (19) Nine mild to moderate asthmatic adults (three males, six females) and six non-asthmatics (one male, five females) underwent endurance running training three times per week for five weeks, at self selected running speeds on a motorized treadmill.
  • (20) Combined propranolol-atropine blockade increased heart rate at rest in the SAP state, and significantly attenuated the tachycardia accompanying treadmill exercise.

Treadwheel

Definition:

  • (n.) A wheel turned by persons or animals, by treading, climbing, or pushing with the feet, upon its periphery or face. See Treadmill.

Example Sentences:

  • (1) Electrical stimulation of the mid-brain in decerebrate animals was used to elicit locomotion on a freely mobile treadwheel.
  • (2) In order to study the effect of running on ATPase activity of myofibril and myosin in the hindlimb muscles, male wister rats of the same venter weighing approximately 50 g were housed in individual cages and allowed to run unimpeded on a treadwheel for 25-30 days.
  • (3) Five legs of a fixed stick insect walked on a double treadwheel.
  • (4) Voluntary flight has previously been observed to stimulate adrenocortical activity in pigeons and in the present study increased circulating corticosterone levels were observed in adult feral pigeons forced to exercise in a treadwheel.
  • (5) However, the administration of apomorphine induced rearing and treadwheel activity only in those animals classified as 'climbers'.
  • (6) The magnitude of the corticosterone response to treadwheel exercise was related to the speed of the moving drum, and hence to the work rate involved.
  • (7) No overall differences in the spontaneous motor behaviour of 'climbing' and 'non-climbing' animals were apparent as assessed by measurement of spontaneous climbing behaviour, by holeboard activity, and by locomotor activity measured in either photocell cages or in a treadwheel.
  • (8) Treadwheel locomotion may serve as a laboratory model for the endocrine physiology of exercise and complements studies on flight.
  • (9) Stick insects walking with five legs on a self-propelled treadwheel and with the left hindleg (L3) on a motor-driven belt may move the "belt" leg L3 and the "wheel" legs with different frequencies.
  • (10) d-Amphetamine, in doses lower than required to increase motor activity, reduced mouse spontaneous locomotor activity when this was assessed using cages equipped with photocell units, using treadwheels, or the measurement of spontaneous climbing behaviour.
  • (11) The ability of an animal to climb in response to apomorphine appears to be dependent on an ability to orient vertically, since this is a component of behaviour common to climbing, rearing, and treadwheel activity.
