What's the difference between virescence and vitrescence?
Virescence
Definition:
() The act or state of becoming green through the formation of chlorophyll.
Example Sentences:
(1) Six nuclear mutants of corn, six of soybean, and seven of cotton displayed low temperature-induced virescence when grown in controlled environments.
(2) The wheat strain used (Neatby's virescent) is homozygous for a pair of recessive alleles (v1) present on chromosome 3B and produces virescent seedlings grown at temperatures below 26 degrees C. When the developing embryos are treated with a test chemical, loss of chromosome 3B or its segment bearing the v1 allele in a progenitor cell produces a green sector in the leaf, whereas a gain of this chromosome induces a white sector.
(3) Plasmids were also detected in two California field isolates of AY-MLO but not in plants infected with the beet leafhopper-transmitted virescence agent, western X, or elm yellows MLOs.
Vitrescence
Definition:
(n.) The quality or state of being vitreous; glassiness, or the quality of being vitrescent; capability of conversion into glass; susceptibility of being formed into glass.
