What's the difference between zoea and zona?

Zoea

Definition:

  • (n.) A peculiar larval stage of certain decapod Crustacea, especially of crabs and certain Anomura.

Example Sentences:

  • (1) The zoea stage and the initial postlarvae substages were very susceptible to ammonia.
  • (2) The amounts of ecdysteroids increased during development and reached maxima of 93, 137, and 165 pg ecdysone equivalents per larva in zoea I, zoea II, and megalopa, respectively.
  • (3) Ecdysteroid levels were determined by radioimmunoassay during the larval development of the spider crab Hyas araneus L. In each of the three larval instars (zoea I, zoea II, megalopa) a minimum in ecdysteroid levels was found during early postmoult and a maximum during premoult.
  • (4) In the eyestalkless animals: -- The duration of the second zoea stage is not significantly affected.
  • (5) Eyestalk removal has been performed on the larvae of Pisidia longicornis the first day after moulting to the second zoea stage.

Zona

Definition:

  • (n.) A zone or band; a layer.

Example Sentences:

  • (1) While the heaviest anterogradely labeled ascending projections were observed to the contralateral ventral posterolateral nucleus of the thalamus, pars oralis (VPLo), efferent projections were also observed to the contralateral ventrolateral thalamic nucleus (VLc) and central lateral (CL) nucleus of the thalamic intralaminar complex, magnocellular (and to a lesser extent parvicellular) red nucleus, nucleus of Darkschewitsch, zona incerta, nucleus of the posterior commissure, lateral intermediate layer and deep layer of the superior colliculus, dorsolateral periaqueductal gray, contralateral nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis and basilar pontine nuclei (especially dorsal and peduncular), and dorsal (DAO) and medial (MAO) accessory olivary nuclei, ipsilateral lateral (external) cuneate nucleus (LCN) and lateral reticular nucleus (LRN), and to a lesser extent the caudal medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) and caudal nucleus prepositus hypoglossi (NPH), and dorsal medullary raphe.
  • (2) Major limitations of the conventional sperm penetration assay are the inability to assess several aspects of sperm function (zona binding and penetration) and the absence of human ovulatory products known to influence fertilization.
  • (3) The effects of clozapine on the spontaneous firing rate of noradrenergic (NE, locus coeruleus), dopaminergic (DA, zona compacta, ventral tegmental area) and non-dopaminergic (zona reticulata) neurons was studied in chloral hydrate anesthetized rats.
  • (4) Zona pellucida solubility, plasminogen activator production, and plasminogen conversion to plasmin increased as embryonic stage advanced; however, plasminogen activator production and plasmin conversion to plasmin were poorly correlated with zona pellucida solubility.

  • (6) It was found by this HPLC that the amino groups of PZP3 hardly reacted with FITC, whereas those of PZP1 and 2 fairly reacted, reflecting the organization of these families in the zona structure.
  • (7) Quantitative morphological study of the zona glomerulosa of the rat adrenal was carried out.
  • (8) The fragment showed smooth muscle relaxant activity in the rabbit aorta and chick rectum assays, an inhibitory effect on aldosterone secretion from bovine adrenal zona glomerulosa cells, and had affinity for specific ANF receptors located in zona glomerulosa cell membranes.
  • (9) The nuclear masses are known as (1) the area lateralis hypothalami (ALH), (2) the nucleus entopeduncularis (nEp), (3) the nucleus semilunaris accessorius (nSA), (4) the nucleus ventromedialis hypothalami (nVmH), and (5) the posterolateral portion of the zona incerta (ZI).

  • (12) Mouse sperm bind to zonae pellucidae of cumulus-free eggs in vitro in a Ca2+-dependent reaction; these sperm are intact by the CTC assay.
  • (13) These findings suggest that AII enhances the growth and the steroidogenic capacity of rat adrenal zona fasciculata.
